Beginning in the Community

First-year students started their Orientation experience with service projects in the Fargo-Moorhead community.

Hands for Change is an event that sends the students to local agencies to meet needs. Concordia’s Campus Service Commission organizes the annual project.

“The purpose of it [Hands for Change] is to allow them to see the importance of service on our campus and also just to engage in their new community,” says Hands for Change coordinator, Leah Hoblit ’13, Greybull, Wyo.

Students served at agencies like the Great Plains Food Bank, Fargo, N.D., and Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre. They valued the opportunity to do something in the community on their first day.

“Fargo-Moorhead is going to be my community for the next four years,” says Gaya Schivega ’15, Kenya, Africa, “so I think it is best to get involved right from the beginning.”
